“Thank you for bringing this to my attention,” Dana Sharp said. She spoke to the young man in his mid-20s sitting in front of her desk. “We try to prevent this sort of thing as much as possible; but, human nature being what it is. It gets difficult.” Adrian noticeably relaxed. His stiff posture slouched and he let out a heavy sigh.
“So, you can fix it?” he asked.
“Absolutely,” Ms. Sharp said. “Though, let me ask you. Do you want to return to your old life?”
“Of course!” Adrian almost yelled. “I had a pretty good life. It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine and I don’t want to give it up. I certainly don’t want to be stuck in this loser’s life.”
“No one’s saying you’re stuck in this life,” Dana Sharp smiled. “You’re not stuck going back to your old one either. As a reward for informing me of this shady operation, I’m giving you the ability to design your life, the way you want it.”
“No, no,” Adrian waved his hand and shook his head. “I’m not taking anyone’s life away from them either.”
“You don’t have to. I’m offering you a brand new life, completely original, entirely your creation. You don’t even have to be human.”
“You…,” Adrian tilted his head at her. “…you can do that?”
“I can do a lot,” Ms. Sharp replied. She placed a red clipboard on the table; it was loaded with a form. “I’ll need a signature to get started. Although, I’m obligated to inform you that signing this gives me full ownership of your soul.”
“My.. soul?” Adrian asked. He was barely used to the fact that alternate universes existed, it seemed souls were real too. “Don’t I need that?”
“Don’t worry, you’d still keep it. The form is a sort of loophole. Your soul belongs to you and only you can move it around. The problem is, it’s affixed to your current body. If I own your soul, I’m free to move it around and put it in any body you choose.”
“And you can take it out of my body?”
“Through various means,” Dana Sharp nodded. “Each soul is different, and some require different methods.” As she spoke, a black portal opened next to her. Adrian watched Melody step out with less awe than he had when she left. She nodded at Ms. Sharp.
“Your impersonator and his criminal connections have been dealt with,” Dana said. “Have you decided what kind of life you want to live?”
“Already?” Adrian asked. He sat down in front of Ms. Sharp 15 minutes ago; Melody stepped out of the room 10 minutes ago.
“I’m a busy woman,” Dana Sharp said. “I don’t like to wait.”
“Yeah, I can tell,” Adrian nodded with a chuckle. Adrian suddenly felt a heavy stare from Melody. He glanced up, but her eyes weren’t on him. She stared at the clipboard in his hand. “Oh!” he quickly scribbled his name on it and handed it back to Dana.
“That’s a good start,” Dana said. “Do you have a life in mind yet?” Adrian shook his head.
“Kind of putting me on the spot here,” he said. “Can I think about it?”
“It’s your life to claim whenever you’re ready. In the meantime, Melody will take you back home and give you a pamphlet.”
